Supporting Sustainability with Smart Cold Chain Logistics

Thu, Feb 23, 2012

For many years, companies have been looking to engage in the triple bottom line known as the three pillars of people, planet and profit (Wikipedia). The Dow Jones has even come up with a Sustainability Index to track “leading sustainability driven companies worldwide” (Dow Jones). The index considers the customer and product evaluation to be:

“Fostering loyalty by investing in customer relationship management and product and service innovation that focuses on technologies and systems, which use financial, natural and social resources in an efficient, effective and economic manner over the long-term” (Dow Jones Sustainability Index)

Companies who look to be green could also enjoy visibility for their triple bottom line efforts from stakeholders including investors looking for green investments.

How Logistics Can Support Sustainability Initiatives

The supply chain is one area a company may look at for green initiatives. Cryoport can help biotech companies impact their cold-chain green efforts by replace some of today's outdated technology.

Many companies are still using dry ice and Styrofoam for their frozen shipping of biomaterials. For decades this was the only solution and so it was not targeted as an opportunity for improvement. Unfortunately, dry ice sublimates and releases carbon dioxide gas and is regulated as a dangerous good by IATA. Styrofoam is gaining awareness for not being eco-friendly and the EPA website states that, “even 500 years from now, the foam coffee cup you used this morning will be sitting in a landfill” (www.epa.gov).

The Cryoport Solution

The Cryoport solution can reduce the need for dry ice and Styrofoam with the use of dry vapor liquid nitrogen shippers that are validated to maintain -150 degrees Celsius temperature for 10 days. This technology is based on liquid nitrogen, which is made of nitrogen -  78.08% of the Earth’s atmosphere and is not considered hazardous nor a dangerous good.

The dewars, or aluminum shippers, are made with recycled materials and used are cleaned and reused more than 100 times before recycling. While other companies may purchase re-usable containers along the entire supply chain, they may not get the full green and budget benefit because they loose that container in the field. Because our complete logistics solution includes shipment tracking, pre-labeling and scheduled pick-ups, Cryoport is also able to get shippers back to our depot for full re-use.
