Cryoport has delivered a breakthrough logistic solution that starts with the innovative Cryoport Express® liquid nitrogen dry vapor shipper.
The custom-built dry vapor shipper is an aluminum cryogenic dewar that uses liquid nitrogen (LN2) and is validated to maintain a stable temperature below -150°C for a 10+ day dynamic shipment. This stable system virtually eliminates sample and cell loss that can occur with temperature excursions due to long holding times and materials such as dry ice sublimating.
This stable shipper is game-changing for companies shipping frozen biologics, that have been using dry ice as the primary transportation solution for deep frozen shipments. Unlike dry ice, which needs to be re-iced every few days and may experience temperature excursions; the dry vapor shipper maintains stable temperatures below -150°C and below the glass transition point (-136°C). This is critical for your expensive, fragile and precious biomaterials.
The ten plus day holding time is an added benefit for companies focused on the expanding global market. Between long shipping lanes, customs delays and the unknowns of new countries and regions, it has never been more important to ensure that your biomaterials are safe.
Top 5 benefits of the Cryoport Express® Dry Vapor Shipper:
1. Innovative
The innovation of the Cyroport Express® Dry Vapor Shipper comes from a patented and unique design and is manufactured at our facilities. This advanced packaging technology is changing the cold chain by replacing dry ice – especially for companies who cannot afford temperature excursions. Duke University even mentioned our solution on 60 Minutes as the, “highest medical standard” for safely and securely transporting frozen materials
2. Reliable
“Ten plus days!” Our clients tell us they love the peace of mind and market opportunities a ten+ day holding time opens up. They also feel confident that our dewars are recharged and revalidated before and after EVERY shipment. The dewars are IATA certified and the nitrogen evaporation rates (NER) are tested before and after each shipment. Many of our clients have also QA’d our facilities and we have met some of the most stringent standards for good manufacturing and good distribution practices. 3. Integrated
The shipper is an integrated component of our entire solution. That ensures that you get complete tracking of every shipment. Each dewar has a validated history on our Logistics Management Platform, the Cryoportal™ and you can pull up shipment history, temperature history, commodities history and NER values through the Cryoportal™.
4. Sustainable
The shipper uses non-hazardous liquid nitrogen dry vapor technology instead of hazardous dry ice and non-recyclable Styrofoam. Every shipper is made with re-used and recycled materials. 5. Cost Effective
The Cryoport Express® LN2 dry vapor shipper is a cost-effective solution for many organizations because it not only includes a end-to-end delivery service but also saves on capital investments, dry-ice purchases, labor, overnight shipping, hazardous goods shipping charges, and, most importantly, the loss of cell and sample integrity.
How it works
The Cryoport Express® dry shipper uses liquid nitrogen (LN2), not dry ice, as the refrigerant. The low cryogenic temperature is critical for reducing risk of biological degradation and the long holding time makes it the safest shipping method to minimize risk of temperature excursions.
The container is designated as a "dry shipper" because our proprietary design results in the LN2 being fully absorbed in a porous foam retention medium that surrounds the specimen chamber. Cold vapor emanating from the liquid nitrogen, entrapped within the foam retention system, provides validated cooling for 10+ days, thereby eliminating the need for intervention and “re-icing” on long haul and cross border shipping lanes. The foam retention system fully absorbs the liquid nitrogen, preventing any spilling – regardless of orientation - even if tipped on its side the liquid nitrogen remains entrapped in the foam and the specimen cylinder stays dry.
The shipper arrives at the initial loading point with two bags for packing the samples (or alternative accessories) or biomaterials already in the cooled chamber depending on the leg of the journey. One bag is made of an absorbent material and one made of Tyvek®, which provides an outer protective barrier and is rated for the safe transport of infectious substances. Simply place the specimen cryovials on holding canes, double bag, and place the bag in the Dry Shipper.

Data monitoring
A data logger can be included with the container to monitor the chain of custody and chain of condition. The chain-of-custody includes carrier log ins and the chain-of-condition includes temperature inside and outside of the shipper.
Unlike conventional data loggers that might measure the temperature of the box, Cryoport's data logger ensures an accurate measure of specimen temperature exposure because the sensor is placed directly in the specimen chamber.
